A precious book, an important contribution to the history of the Italian Resistance.
Between 1943 and 1945 over 5,000 Soviet citizens fought alongside the Italian partisans for the liberation of our country from Nazi-fascism.

THE BOOK: A glorious yet unknown historical event comes to light thanks to this book. Between 1943 and 1945 over 5,000 Soviet citizens fought alongside the Italian partisans to free our country from the Nazi-Fascist yoke. In the first part Sandro Teti frames the historical period in which the events occurred, while Massimo Eccli provides a list, largely unpublished, of the names of partisans who fought together with our compatriots, the result of in-depth research in the Soviet, Italian, Germans and Americans.
The first Soviets to join the Resistance were those taken prisoner in Russia in 1941-1943 by Mussolini’s army and interned in Italy. After September 8, these fled and joined our partisans. The others, who starting from 1944 were sent by the Nazis to our country to fight the partisans, instead deserted from the collaborationist “legions” into which many of them had been forcibly recruited. The Soviets fought in the Center-North and had a high number of fallen, over 500. The most famous is Fyodor Poletaev, awarded the highest Italian and Soviet honours: the gold medal for military valor and the gold star of Hero of the USSR. In addition to the Russians, many Ukrainians, Belarusians, Azerbaijanis, Georgians, Armenians, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Moldovans and Tatars fought, among others. Many rest in the shrines of the Resistance in Genoa and Turin, in the monumental cemetery of Milan, in the Certosa of Bologna. Others were buried next to their enemies in German cemeteries in Italy.
The long research work carried out by Eccli in the archives not only of Italy and Russia, but also of Germany and the United States, has made it possible to identify these unknown soldiers whose tombs now finally bear a name and surname. In many cases it was also possible to trace children and grandchildren who were thus able to find out the fate of their loved ones.

Massimo Eccli Born in San Zeno di Montagna, in the province of Verona. After graduating in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bologna, in 1998 he moved to Moscow, where he still lives and teaches Italian language and literature. For many years he has been involved as a researcher on the participation of the Soviets in the Italian Resistance.
